Mathematics and statistics distance learning: more than just online teaching

Abstract At the Open University, where students learn online and at a distance, School of Mathematics Statistics has for many years provided innovative ways supporting outside ‘classroom’ environment so was well prepared to support during COVID-19 pandemic. These forms include forums help with module choice taster resources including diagnostic quizzes self-assess their readiness study individual modules receive targeted support. Since 2017, these resources, more, have been incorporated into multi-functional student-facing website. The website enables all units, both academic non-academic, provide consistent academic, pastoral social studying mathematics statistics online. By focusing on different stages student’s journey, provides one-stop shop self-serve obtain appropriate each point in own student lifecycle. Data gathered frequency use website, together results from staff questionnaires, insight how evaluation highlights need clear signposting such resources. In addition, wide range which enable make informed choices is shown be particularly important who students.
